The face lift procedure is typically used to address the jowls, the smile lines (nasolabial folds) and the looseness and laxity of the neck skin and muscle. Although there are many less invasive techniques (fillers, Botox®, skin care) to treat aging changes in the upper face, the laxity of the lower face is often best addressed with surgery. Face lifts can be performed in several different ways and are called many different names; short-scar, S-incision, MACS-lift, deep-plane lift, tri-plane lift. In general, a face lift procedure should be tailored to each patients unique anatomy and individual concerns and a careful discussion regarding the pluses and minuses of each technique is essential. Smaller, shorter incision, face lifts may be suitable for younger patients with minimal jowling or neck laxity. Full face lifts may be necessary for older patients with significant skin laxity. The incision for the face lift is curved around the ear to be as inconspicuous as possible but changes in the hairline are often necessary to hide the scar as much as possible. Recovery from face lift surgery typically takes several weeks and since healing is an ongoing process the final results may not be apparent for several months. Obviously the smaller the procedure the more rapid the recovery, whereas the more invasive the procedure the longer it takes for patients to recover.
